Don’t Let Her Down, Your vote counts!
Let’s cut to the chase. You know good and well, it hurts when you see the disappointment in the eyes of someone you admire and respect. To know that you let someone down whose mission was to serve us! You know how the saying goes: you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. Don't be that horse!
In her documentary, Becoming, Michelle Obama gave us a behind the scenes perspective of her well-known memoir. There was a moment that truly stood out to us and almost brought tears to our eyes. Michelle said:
Every time Barack didn’t get the Congress he needed, that was because our folks didn’t show up. After all that work, they just couldn’t be bothered to vote at all: that’s my trauma.
If that did not make your cringe, maybe this would:
The people who didn't vote at all, the young people, the women, that's when you think, man, people think this is a game?
It makes us sit with ourselves and think, are we the ones responsible for the election of Trump in 2016? Michelle goes on to say, "It was almost like a slap in the face”. We let our Potus down. We metaphorically slapped our mother!
A lot of us have the mindset that our vote will not count. If you are one of those people, you’re wrong. You have the power in your hands to make a difference. It’s time to change your mindset and be the change you wish to see. If you posted a black square, vote! If you dislike the color orange (don’t let that go over your head), vote! If you can stand in line for some new Jordans, stand in line to vote! If you want to see a change in your community, vote! If you ever want to see justice for Breonna Taylor, vote!
Vote for Harriet, Rosa, Shirley, Angela, and Tamika, be the fire that sparks a change.
